For licensed Ohio estheticians, skin care specialists and lash and wax techs

Esthetician insurance in Ohio

Ohio estheticians need their own liability policy. An esthetician license from the Ohio State Cosmetology and Barber Board covers skin care services such as facials, waxing, peels and lash work, and a claim from one of those services lands on you, not the salon. The policy you can buy online here does not include estheticians, so Amanda quotes esthetician liability through the other insurance companies we work with. Send the form and Amanda will get back to you with a quote.

The Ohio rules estheticians ask about most

TopicWhat Ohio requiresSource
Continuing education 4 hours every two-year renewal period: 1 hour on Ohio laws and rules, 3 hours on safety and infection control, from a Board-approved provider. Hours completed for one license count toward your other Board licenses. OAC 4713-21-03, ORC 4713.09
CE exemptions Your first renewal after initial licensure; licensees 65 or older at the start of the renewal period; anyone who has held a Board license for 30 years or more. Human trafficking training is still required. OAC 4713-21-03, OAC 4713-1-14
Cosmetology-branch renewal Cosmetologist, hair designer, esthetician, natural hair stylist, manicurist, independent contractor and salon licenses expire January 31 of odd-numbered years. Current period ends January 31, 2027. CE must be finished by January 15, 2027. ORC 4713.57, ORC 4713.59
Booth renters Practicing in a salon as an independent contractor requires an independent contractor license from the Board. Barbers renting space in a barbershop need one too, and must keep their wallet license or e-certificate plus photo ID available for inspection. Fee: $75 to issue, $70 to renew. ORC 4713.39, ORC 4713.14, ORC 4709.09, OAC 4713-13-02
Inspections The Board inspects within 90 days of a facility opening, after a complaint, within 90 days after a documented violation, and at least once every two years. Inspections are unannounced, during normal business hours. ORC 4713.07, OAC 4713-1-10

Amanda Hill, licensed cosmetologist, former Ohio State Cosmetology and Barber Board inspector, and licensed insurance account manager

Ask Amanda

She has owned a salon, inspected hundreds more, and now insures them.

Amanda Hill is a licensed Ohio cosmetologist. She owned and ran her own salon for 7 years, then spent 14 years as an inspector for the Ohio State Cosmetology and Barber Board, covering southern Ohio. Today she is a licensed insurance account manager at Stockton-Hill Insurance in Kingston, Ohio, where she helps Ohio cosmetologists, barbers and salon owners choose coverage and get ready for inspections. She has been behind the chair, behind the front desk and behind the clipboard, so she knows what your clients expect, what your salon owner will ask for, and what an inspector looks for.

“Estheticians got inspected on the same infection control rules as everyone else: single-use wax sticks, disinfected implements, a clean treatment table between clients. The rules follow the license, and so does the liability.”

Questions Ohio cosmetologists and barbers ask

Can Ohio estheticians buy online here?

No. The policy you can buy online here is for barbers, cosmetologists and makeup artists, and estheticians are not on its eligible list. That is not a dead end: Stockton-Hill Insurance quotes esthetician liability through other insurance companies. Use the quote form on the esthetician insurance page and Amanda will get back to you with a quote.

Do Ohio estheticians need liability insurance?

Ohio law does not require it to hold an esthetician license: Ohio Revised Code Chapter 4713 sets license, sanitation and continuing education rules, not insurance rules. Many salon and spa owners require booth renters and independent contractors to carry their own policy, and a reaction to a peel, wax or lash adhesive can turn into a claim against you personally, not the salon.

What does esthetician liability insurance usually cover?

Usually two things: professional liability for injury or loss from your services, such as a burn from a peel or a reaction to wax or lash adhesive, and general liability for injury or property damage at your station, such as a slip-and-fall. Legal defense is part of both. Limits, price and add-ons depend on the insurance company that quotes you, so we confirm them in writing before you buy.
